Dusteroid – Tyranno Sonor
Riffs, we love ‘em and if you don’t then what are you doing reading this ‘zine?
London’s Dusteroid are a band that quite clearly worships, shamelessly, at the altar of the riff. That much is evident from the moment that Tyranno Sonor’s opening track Defy roars into life with a guitar part that those other hairy London riff-meisters, Orange Goblin would be proud of. Dusteroid are heavy, fuzzy and unashamedly groovy. I love it!
The song titles tell you everything you need to know. Album opener Defy is followed by Highroller, the fantastically named Tomahawk Storm Troopers and Whiskey Overdose. Get through that lot and you still have tracks with names like The Rolling Head and Dusty Road to look forward to. It would be easy to make a Viking Skull comparison, so I will, Dusteroid are like Viking Skull, only better. I like Viking Skull, I really like Dusteroid!
Guitarist / vocalist Dimitris Bianos has nailed ‘that sound’, you know the one I mean. It’s fuzzy, melodic, solid, all round satisfying and live it’s the sort of sound that makes your (flared) trousers flap around your ankles. The vocals are gruff (as you would expect from a man who’s written an ode to whiskey. Whiskey Overdose includes the line “my whisky is my soul”!!), but never shouted; there’s melody and even bits you can sing along to! The rhythm section, made up of bassist T Jay Tarantino and drummer Sam Forway, are as tight as a nun’s nether region and the joy with which Dusteroid pummel out their tunes is blatant and infectious. Despite the obvious comparisons there is more to Dusteroid than their quite hefty Orange Goblin influence. The track Imprisonment has a grungy Melvins feel to it and that is followed by The Rolling Head which carries on the heavy grunge sound, there’s a bit of Alice In Chains in there as well, I’m sure of it.
On their press release the band describe themselves as “ . . . alcohol fuelled stoner grooves delivered with the volume control set to 11!” Well, there’s no denying that but there’s more, much more to Dusteroid than that. If you’re a disciple of the riff then you have to get a copy of this album, if you don’t your friends will quite rightly mock you.
